Chris Benoit’s doctor, Phil Asten charged for illegally distributing drugs Chris Benoit’s doctor, Phil Asten, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to more than 175 counts of illegally distributing drugs to patients. He had already pleaded guilty on January 29.

This marks a development in what is known as one of the worst tragedies in the wrestling circle. Chris Benoit was scheduled to perform at a pay-per-view event but after several alarming texts to Chavo Guerrero, the WWE called the authorities to search Benoit’s home. He was found dead along with his wife and son. The WWE ran a tribute show but quickly pulled it out and apologized after the police uncovered the grisly tale: Benoit had hanged himself but not before killing his wife and child.

Asten was regularly illegally providing Benoit and several others with prescription drugs, including steroids. While a medical examiner could not determine if the prescription drugs directly led to the deaths of Benoit’s family, the judge still found Asten guilty of misconduct. Astin had earlier admitted that he issued prescriptions that lead to the overdose and death of a female patient in 2007.

Speaking of steroids, Kevin Nash said in a 2007-dated interview that he thinks newly-signed TNA talent Bobby Lashley may be taking steroids. It was noted that Nash’s statements came during the height of the Benoit murder-suicide case.
