Edge (Adam Copeland) Biography
Edge is a multi-titled Canadian wrestler currently working under the WWE’s SmackDown Brand. He is the current World Heavyweight Champion and has also captured multiple titles both as a singles and tag team wrestler.
Personal Life
Edge’s real name is Adam Copeland and was born on October 30, 1973 in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. He is friends with fellow WWE star Christian (Jay Reso). When they were kids, they attended WrestleMania VI. This episode in his life helped him decide to become a professional wrestler one day.
He has been married twice, first married to Alanah Morley, whom he divorced in November 2001. He was also married to Lisa Ortiz on October 2004, but they soon divorced in November 2005. In 2005, he was in a controversial adulterous relationship with Amy Dumas, known in the ring as Lita. Lita was then Matt Hardy’s girlfriend. However, when Lita suffered an injury and had to take time off the ring, she entered in a relationship with Edge. Matt Hardy was eventually released from the company to avoid any conflicts but was brought back when the company turned the relationship into a worked storyline. Their story was one of the most talked about issues of the year by the internet wrestling community.
Wrestling Career
Edge started his career in the independent circuits in Canada and the Great Lakes, using monikers such as Sexton Hardcastle and Damon Stryker. In their early years, Edge had already teamed up with Christian as the Suicide Blondes (a reference to the INXS song) and The Canadian Rockers. It was not until 1998 that Edge got his first taste of the WWF experience. Together with Gangrel and Christian, they formed The Brood, a stable of goth wrestlers. After they kicked Gangrel out, the duo started feuding with teams like The Hardy Boyz and The Dudleys, culminating in several groundbreaking Tables, Ladders, and Chairs matches. By the time the duo disbanded, they had already won the tag titles 7 times.
As Edge pursued a singles career, he went on to become the 2001 King of the King winner and an Intercontinental Champion. When he was sent to SmackDown, he won the tag titles once more, this time with Rey Mysterio. As Edge was picking up steam, he suffered a serious neck injury forcing him out of the ring for almost a year. In his return, however, he again captured the tag titles and Intercontinental title.
Edge transitioned from a fan favorite to one obsessed with the World Heavyweight Title, but always coming up short when the opportunity arises. After his worked storyline with Matt Hardy and Lita, Edge won the WWE Championship from Cena after he cashed in his “Money in the Bank” contract after Cena survived a bloody Elimination Chamber match. He also had a high profile feud with Randy Orton against Degeneration X but was cut short when Triple H suffered a torn quadriceps injury during a match.
In his return to SmackDown, he would back the World Heavyweight title several times, picking up wins from Batista, The Undertaker, and most recently, John Cena. Edge forged an alliance with Vickie and Chavo Guerrero to form La Familia. Edge lost his title to Cena at WrestleMania 25 but regained it at Backlash 2009. He is currently in a feud with Jeff Hardy for the same title.
