The Brian Kendrick (Brian David Kendrick) Biography
Brian David Kendrick is a professional wrestler working under the World Wrestling Entertainment’s Raw brand as “The Brian Kendrick”.
Kendrick was born on May 29, 1979 in Fairfax, Virginia. In order to save money to attend wrestling school, Kendrick worked as a dishwasher in a pizza parlor. He then attended the Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy, adapting the name Spanky. He made his professional wrestling debut on October 8, 1999 in the independent circuit.
The World Wrestling Federation offered him a developmental contract in 2000 and was sent to Memphis Championship Wrestling, one of the WWF’s developmental territories. Before MCW folded, he was able to capture several titles within the promotion, including the MCW Southern Tag Team Championship and the MCW Light Heavyweight Championship, winning it three times. When the promotion folded, Kendrick was released from his WWF contract. He then spent time with Ring of Honor, Heartland Wrestling Association, and All Pro Wrestling. He also wrestled in Japan under the Pro-Wrestling Zero One promotion under the name “Leonardo Spanky”. He used the name because of his resemblance to actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Kendrick signed a contract with the WWE in 2002 and made his debut in January 2003, appearing in mascots for the local teams he was competing in. He then went back to his old Spanky gimmick and feuded with John Cena due to the similarity of their gimmicks. Both men would perform battle raps. Cena eventually emerged as the victor when he defeated spanky in May 2003. Kendrick then started teaming up with Paul London but he suddenly left the company in January 2004, returning to Japan for Zero1.
For most of 2004-2005, Kendrick was back with the independent circuit. Back in Japan, he would capture the Zero-1 United States Championship. Along with Low Ki, they were the NWA Light Heavyweight Tag Team Champions in two different occasions. During this time, he also had a brief stint with TNA Wrestling but eventually returned to Ring of Honor. Kendrick competed in a number of title opportunities but came up short. In July 2005, Kendrick re-signed with the WWE.
Kendrick reappeared in SmackDown on August 2005. He reformed his tag team partnership with Paul London and quickly feuded with the WWE Tag Team Champions MNM. London and Kendrick made an impact in the title picture, handing the champions several defeats before eventually winning the tag titles from MNM. During this time, WWE Diva Ashley Massaro started accompanying them in matches, becoming their valet. Although they were the champions, Kendrick and London were always billed as the underdogs but it suited them quite well. They held the WWE Tag Team Championships for a record 331 days, eventually losing it to Deuce and Domino.
The team was then drafted to Raw on June 2007 and was placed in the World Tag Team Championship picture but their success in SmackDown didn’t spill over to Raw. The team was then separated in the next WWE draft, with Kendrick going back to SmackDown and London staying at Raw. London was eventually released by the company while Kendrick hired a bodyguard, Ezekiel Jackson. Kendrick now played the part of a heel and was now wrestling under the name “The Brian Kendrick”. Kendrick and Jackson oftentimes competed for the WWE Tag Team Championship but have failed to win the titles. By 2009, he was drafted back to Raw where he wrestles as a singles wrestler.
