The Brothers Bloom is an American film which is set to have a limited released on May 15, 2009. And there is a wide release on May 29, 2009. This is a heist film starred by Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac), Adrien Brody (Kingkong), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) and Rachel Weisz (The Mummy Returns). This is directed by Rian Johnson under Summit Entertainment.

The film’s plot is about the Brothers Bloom who are one of the greatest con artists. The brothers were Stephen (Mark Ruffalo) and Bloom (Adrien Brody). They started tricking people back when they were children, and from then they live their lives stealing from different people to millionaires. They work together with a silent sidekick named Bang-bang (Rinko Kikuchi) who is an explosive expert. Stephen is the one who does the planning while Bloom is the one who always go near the victims and the one to feel the guilt in the end. Bloom tried to quit because he wanted to have a good life. He went drunk then Stephen finds him and offered him one last job and then he can quit after doing it.

They are up to a one last job and that is to steal from a wealthy heiress named Penelope Stamp (Rachel Weisz). She is a lonely eccentric girl who believes she has less time. She wanted to do a different or strange kind of adventure. The con men took advantage of her loneliness. But the plan was complicated from the moment Bloom fell in love with Penelope. The moment she discovered that they are con men; she decided to be one of them as well.

The film is not any kind of film that the audience can just predict what happen, it is like having to guess who was being conned and who is not. From different reviews, most movie critics love the plot since it is not boring. The cinematic, costumes and the steamships will remind audience about the Wes Anderson films. It is a quirk-filled film of a con game and love story at the same time. It is a smart film as it is entertaining. The director Rian Johnson was awarded of Outstanding Achievement in Directing at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The film originally has a release date last January 2009 but was pushed to May 2009. As Summit Entertainment informed, this is because of the many similar films that were being released in January. Last, April 23, 2009, the online streaming video site Hulu posted the first seven minutes of the film.

The Limits of Control is a movie void of any Hollywood formula and trappings that you shouldn’t expect all the little pertinent details to be laid out in the next two sequences. This is not a typical mainstream film you can take your friends to but arguably it presents it own charm. Jim Jarmusch offers a truly minimalist flavor in this languid feature-length. Jarmusch pieces are to be appreciated as you would an art piece, vibrant but begging you to search in its depths its true intention. But patience might reward you with evasive cues that almost point out the whole motive of the film.

Although, the lone man portrayed by Isaach De Bankole, reveals only as little and offers no difference with his inscrutinable gaze and apparent lack of trust from anyone. Isaach De Bankole can’t help but place you face to face with coolness, even in sharkskin. He conveys so much meticulousness in his posture and not a hint of confusion when Creole flavored his directives with philosophies. When Nude, Paz de la Huerta’s character who is literally nude all throughout the film, asked him “No sex?,” Lone man simply answered, “Not while I’m working.” It is simply pointblank that it can be comical but he sure is cool.

Set in the present, the walking man journey starts with a job order from Creole, played by Alex Descas, a French actor. From the airport, the walking man’s directives are tinged with a sense of urgency and unease. The menace is counterbalanced with the almost comical translation delivered by Jean-Francois Stevenin, as the Creole’s sidekick, French. The Creole’s orders are in, well, Creole, subtitled in English. The sidekick repeats and modifies these orders in English. It offers a dry humor but injects a sense or urgency for the lone man to accomplish.

Repetition, by the way, is central and key in the whole story and becomes apparent as the Lone Man travels to Madrid. Days or months would roll with an indiscriminate pattern broken only with a slight deviation in his activities: a trip to the museum, two cups of espressos, and a mysterious exchange of almost identical matchboxes from a man or a woman. Tilda Swinton, a favorite of mine, plays one of the matchbox women. Repetition also comes in the oft asked question in some matchbox exchanges, “Usted no habla español, verdad?”

The films utter beauty leaves so much to question the arguments that you might be so solidly convinced. Lone Man’s “Reality is arbitrary,” points out that escape, provided by products of imagination, is our key to escape the control of everyday frustration. The movie serves images in a fantastic array that compliments should be given to cinematographer, Christopher Doyle, and the director’s decision for the collaboration.

All in all, the film is an experience. It is a boxful of sound and images affair that somehow comes up logical. Its appeal lies with its brilliant cinematography, lucid philosophies, jarring images, and an enigmatic character whose presence is a necessity in its textured storyline. With its dreamlike and stark reality weaving through the film, I could say it might be a puzzle worth your scrutiny.

Controversial as it may seem, the film, Angels & Demons is still in my list of anticipated must-sees for this year. Having read the prequel to The Da Vinci Code novel, and finding it more engaging, one couldn’t help but go through the same eagerness on how the book will transition into film. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Robert Langdon, Harvard symbologist, who once again has to rely on his book and street smarts. Still portraying the same geeky charm, Hanks delivered a believable scholar who surprisingly can also throw a punch. The whodunit caper brings them across Rome as they unravel the culprit.

Released as a sequel to The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons is helmed by director, Ron Howard once again, who had taken positive liberties to the film. One could see a more relaxed and more confident Robert Langdon. I’m satisfied that they chose well to have Ayelet Zurer play Vittoria Vetra, a female character that has the perfect blend of intelligence, quiet strength, and feistiness. I can’t help but wish that she has to be the “one” for Langdon or Dan Brown wouldn’t have created her. If you are waiting to see Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca in the film, he has been replaced by the Irish Camerlengo Patrick McKenna to accommodate Ewan McGregor’s Scottish background. This is the only apparent change in the movie that other novel fanatics might question. Although, I found that change unnecessary, it doesn’t really affect the overall movie experience.

The story is as exhilarating as I imagined it would be. The Illuminati angle pretty much launched the plot of the film with a stop-at-nothing objective to exact vengeance on the Catholic Church. With four kidnapped cardinals, favorite candidates for the ongoing conclave, Robert Langdon and Vittoria Vetra raced across Rome, following an ancient Path of Illumination to save the cardinals AND somehow find the stolen antimatter. Mr. Gray, the assassin, remains two steps ahead most of time, so frustrating that I couldn’t wait for Robert Langdon to finally confront him in the fourth altar of Science.

Angels & Demons is meant to be enjoyed as any thrilling murder mystery. Despite the religious and science conflict of the film, my faith didn’t feel threatened at all. As Tom Hanks said, he was just there to solve the murder.

Russell Crowe sets the standards for political thriller affairs with State of Play and rightfully so, this movie is so compressed with a powerful cast that great performances is the only thing to expect. Although I’m not a fan of serial from where it was based on, I’m not a fan of political thrillers at all. The trailer left the impression that I’d be snoozing in my seat the whole time. But I’m not one to get daunted. State of Play did posses the requisite twist as any thriller would but it somehow suck you in by stoking your curiosity on who really did it and why. To strengthen my resolve to concentrate and enjoy the movie, I ventured to watch it alone. The film opens to the demise of Sonia Baker (Maria Thayer), research assistant to fast-rising Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck). Stephen decided to turn to an old college buddy, Cal McCaffrey (Russell Crowe) who is also a well-known reporter. Cal starts to investigate and then decided to join forces with Della Frye (Rachel McAdams), a junior political reporter under Cal’s mentorship. Both have uncovered evidence pointing to PointCorp, a private security group, as one of the key suspects of Sonia’s murder. Somehow, Sonia was helping Stephen gather evidence in PointCorp’s underhanded activities. In the meantime, Cal’s editor Cameron Lynne (Helen Mirren) of Washington Globe have been keeping the corporate bosses at bay while waiting for Cal’s scoop. Cameron had to continually struggle in making the bottom line amidst changes in the new media focused on making profits more than integrity in journalism. Somehow she echoes what is journalism’s current predicament. Somehow among the mix, Ben Affleck holds his own among the powerful ensemble in the movie. I’ve always thought of him as good actor but needs a really solid vehicle and more years in the industry to bring him up to par with the likes of Russell Crowe. But he can be utterly disappointing on how could he cheat on his wife, Anne (Robin Wright Penn) I guess, he was effective on his role. Between the production’s original choice, Edward Norton, and replacement, Ben Affleck, I would have picked Edward Norton as he would so fit the role. Russell Crowe just blows you away with how immersed he was in the character, from his old school air of confidence the obvious heavy paunch. All in all State of Play is a must-watch. It requires you to doggedly follow the twists or else you’ll miss out. Definitely not for the faint of brain.
